Scorecard

The tears of the Bluebirds were ringing in our ears as we left Cardiff city on that hot afternoon to travel up the valley to Tonyrefail. One Jiffy Davies was making his first appearance of the season having been carefully taking care of  duties in the peace corp the night before – as he describes it the “Koffi Annan“ role as he separated upset fans unable to bear the loss on Saturday afternoon at Wembley.

We had visited Ton the week before but been thwarted by the rain and this weekend the withdrawl of Pencoed, late before the fixture , saw our good hosts step in and provide a fixture at the leisure centre ground [Ed: Pencoed had won through to the second round of the Welsh Cup and had a home tie that clashed with our fixture - happily, your Club officers are ever alert to such matters and we're grateful to Tonyrefail who stepped in to offer us a game]. It looked a fine wicket and the Skipper duly won the toss and elected to bat with the two run machines – “Dog crusher Steadman“ and “Pompey Hutchins“ who brought gifts of Sausage rolls and grapes into the changing room. Apparently Nick’s secret of success is to eat as much as possible on the way to the game.

The opening bowlers were pacy with some waywardness but the two openers were solid and took the score to 199 for no wicket when Andy was caught for 64, to add to the many runs he has already scored this season. Nick was in good form, smashing a couple of sixes before he retired on 116 not out. During our innings the American Wanderer “Chairman Havers“ turned up to oversee proceedings and witnessed the wine club tasting party that came to sit in the sun and enjoy the festival of runs. We also had one player with a headache from the incessant chat of the female sorority who were draped around the Gazebo, Moonhead was in great pain from the sheer range of subjects that were being discussed by these great debaters. Such subjects as “who of them was a Mrs potato head and a nob head” and who needed “a slap in the chops“ were a great trial to the Candyman’s ears.

The next men in made contributions in the order – "Red legs“ Payne scored a quick 16 and Captain of the Vice squad Duffy smote 15. The senior pro Gog Davis prodded around for 5 and Jiffy made a nifty 7. The man who brings his own fan club with him ( Bill Ward ) made 10 not out and the Welshpool Wonder made a brave 1 not out. The Cavaliers total was a very respectable 273 for 5 off their 40 overs.

A good tea was taken in the sun and Gravey had come along to admire the proceedings. The news was coming out that Sparrow legs Brown and the injury prone one armed oracle had been seen dancing the victory parade in the South of France as Cardiff Blues won the cup final against Toulon.

So the wine tasters had moved on and it was time for the Ton boys to take a turn at bashing the hard red thing that Daffy Mcveigh was whirling down. The darling of Ulster was slightly off colour but did bowl some beauts and finished with 0 for 25 off his 5 overs. At the other end Jiffy was out of the blocks and turned his arm over for 8 overs finishing with 2 for 56. His first wicket was the substitute player brought in at late notice by the oppo because one individual had a hangover of Icelandic volcano proportions. It was the champagne moment as he looked a good bat and he smashed one at Pompey Nick who plucked it out of the air like David James with such ease and real class.

The number 3 came in and had a very good eye smashing the ball around until Jimmy Archerd came on – the Skipper had received a new name from the girls doing the scoring as they yack, yacked away giving all sorts of information in the scoring book. Jimmy claimed he was rusty and after a couple of looseners he began to find his length and the walloping number 3 was bowled neck & crop by a beauty. Shortly afterwards the other opener was stumped by Dave P off the same bowler Archerd.

Once these top three batsmen were out the innings subsided as Archerd took his first five for in the Cavaliers colours, finishing on 5 for 14 on five overs (Ed: the scorebook has now been checked and the skipper's so-called 6th over turned out to have been Bill's 2nd]. Red Legs Payne took 2 for 10 and the Gog 1 for 4. There were two catches for Steadman, another one for Pompey, one for Skipper Archerd, one for Rudry Dave & one for the Candyman. The Ton were all out for 119, a victory by a good gap of 154 runs.

It was a good team performance and the hottest day of the year produced one of the biggest winning margins for the Cavaliers [Ed: we await verification from the Club's antiquarian but it is currently believed that 273/5 is not only a new club record for the highest total scored, but the victory margin is also the largest run winning one ever].

Champagne moment: Nick’s excellent catch at the start of the Ton innings

Team: Jimmy Marchant (capt), Jason Duffy (vice capt), Dave Parsons (wkt), Nick Hutchings, Andrew Steadman, Glenn Chapman, Steve Davis, Gareth Payne, Bill Ward, Jonathan Davies, Michael McVeigh
