Scorecard

A day of glorious sunshine was replaced by a typical, dull overcast Llanrumney evening by the time we arrived.  GE seemed to have heard that batting second was going to be hard as it got dark because they seemed in no hurry to start after they had won the toss and decided to bat.

Mike (4-1-7-0) and Al (4-0-20-1) gave us our now customary niggardly start with the new ball, giving little away, even to our adventurous 6-2 field, made necessary by Glenn opening his bowels in the changing rooms between over 2 and 7! It was no surprise when a lifter from Al caught Stephenson on the gloves and was well taken by Dave behind the stumps.  Andy Graveson (0-24) bowled a short spell alongside the skipper before Evans (2-14) and Duffy (2-6) were introduced.

I got a rare LBW to remove Norey before bowling Griffiths with possibly the slowest ball in the history of cricket.  Jason showed skills learnt from the world cup in the Caribbean by ‘following the batsmen’ rather than trying to hit the stumps and bowled Barlow off his pads after hitting him well outside leg.  Another ball at the batsmen saw Gane Sr fall to a remarkable tumbling catch by Glenn – possibly helped by shedding a few pounds earlier in the innings.  Dawkins and Gravesen finished the innings off well.  The young opener Gane Jr batted through the innings for 42 not out, despite trying to reverse Dil-Scoop Andy off the penultimate ball.  GE finished their innings on 92-5.

Steaders and McVeigh resumed their opening partnership in reply, without really pushing they were able to score at 6 before Mike edged to first slip for 25 – although judging from the surprised reaction of the fielders he may have been unlucky for the fielder to have held on.  Jimmy never got going against the spinners and was caught behind off Griffiths for 16, before Steaders (28*) and Glenn (13*) finished the job with 5 overs to spare.

Champagne Moment: Glenn’s catch, aided by the fact he didn’t shit himself when he landed!

Team: Jimmy Marchant (capt), Jason Duffy (vice capt), Dave Parsons (wkt), Andrew Steadman, Mike McVeigh, Glenn Chapman, Nigel Adams, Andrew Graveson, Alasdair Fraser, Chris Evans, Michael Dawkins
