Playing for the Cavaliers

Through this website you should be able to find most (if not all) the info you need to join up with - and enjoy playing cricket with - the Cavaliers ...

... forms for membership and touring

... fixtures, directions, maps and links to opposition websites

... details of the Club's officers and its history

... club clothing

... match reports, scorecards, records and other stats

If there's anything you can't find, please contact us - if you're a professional looking for a club then please save yourself the trouble of sending us your playing profile - you'd have to take your turn in selection for games and, perhaps most importantly for you, we charge you to play (not the other way round).

What you can expect from the Cavaliers ...

  •  Our members come from all walks of life and have a wide mix of cricketing skills and ability - we welcome anyone over the age of 18 who loves the game
  •  We aim to give everyone as much cricket as we can, weather permitting, to suit their level and availability
  •  We provide equipment necessary for the games (apart from personal protective equipment - the "box" in old English)
  •  We have a mix of midweek League, mid-week friendly and weekend friendlies that offer a range of competitiveness but always aspiring to play within the spirit of cricket and to enjoy the game and its social side
  •  We will notify you at the earliest opportunity of the cancellation of any game for which you have been selected
  •  We aim to limit the emails sent to you on behalf of the Club to those that are directly relevant to the Club and your involvement with its members and with cricket - you may request to have an email address removed from the email list at any time.

... and what we expect from you

  •  Full contact details
  •  Early notification of your availability and any changes to it
  •  Prompt response to team announcements
  •  Willingness to undertake your share of tasks during the season such as giving lifts, packing bags, looking after club kit, umpiring and scoring, writing match reports, etc
  •  To be appropriately dressed for cricket - many of the clubs we visit at weekends have a long tradition of welcoming visitors but they expect us to be turned out for cricket [there's a good range of cricket club clothing available through the on-line shop] - and you'll need your own personal protective equipment
  •  To support the Club, its activities and ethos, including the payment of subscriptions, fees, etc without the need for chasing

For indoor nets and preparations see 2011 Season page

Below is some useful information about the 'mechanics' of the club

Team "mechanics": During the course of a season, we aim for everyone to have the same opportunity in terms of team selection, 12th man and reserve duties, collecting match fees, scoring, umpiring and managing the kit bag.

Availability: selection is based on players' availability sheets. We introduced a new way of managing availability and selection in 2009 to reduce the workload on Officers in 'chasing' up guys. Now the responsibility rests with you to make sure the selection panel know of any changes, eg. when you are available, are away on holiday or with work, or are unfit (and, of course, when you are fit again). The Availability/Selection Protocol has more information

12th man: we try to have a "12th man" for each match to help with important tasks such as ensuring the scoreboard is kept up-to-date, rotating the umpires when we are batting, ensuring the kit is all bagged up at the end of the game, and so on.  If another player is unable to start the game or becomes injured the 12th man takes their place. The 12th man is then automatically selected for the next game for which he is available and, over the course of the season, it is likely that everyone will do a stint. The 12th Man has more details

Reserves: changes to work commitments or domestic arrangements sometimes mean an original selection cannot then play.  Wherever possible, we try to get 1, 2 or 3 reserves who are available for the game but are not in the original run-on team.  Players listed as reserves are asked not to make other arrangements as there is a strong possibility that they may be called upon by the time match day comes round.  Reserves who don't get a game are generally selected at the next available opportunity.

Kit bag: We are grateful to Jeremy Sparkes who looks after the kit over the winter but during the season the bags need to be taken home by those who are playing in the next game. Again, we look to everyone to play their part in sharing this around.
